Position Summary:The Institute of Arctic Biology (IAB) is seeking motivated candidates for temporary research technicians to work on a study of the reproductive ecology of Rock Ptarmigan in interior Alaska.

80Conduct studies of breeding ecology of ptarmigan. Duties include capture and marking birds, nest searching and monitoring, radio tracking, and accurate data collection and entry.Essential

Two crews of 2 individuals each will work with a MS student, who will move between camp locations as needed, to complete this research project. The study sites are sub-alpine areas near Eagle Summit along the Steese Highway and along the eastern portion of the Denali Highway, near Paxson. The study will examine factors affecting variation in reproductive ecology of ptarmigan.

The applicant must be comfortable working alone and as part of a team. The ability to comfortably live in close quarters in a remote area without access to regular electronic communication is an absolute necessity.

Duties will include capturing and marking ptarmigan, nest searching and monitoring, radio tracking, and maintenance of accurate field records and data entry. Individuals will be expected to work long days in sometimes difficult conditions with extensive hiking and possible operation of ATVs while living in a remote field camp.


Ability to act professionally and be respectful of coworkers and members of the public from diverse cultures. Knowledge of how to collect and maintain detailed field data for use in science and monitoring. Demonstrate ability to learn new skills and help coworkers learn new skills. Ability and fitness to negotiate and perform work in difficult conditions, including back country travel. Willing to work long hours in these conditions. Must have the ability to be comfortable living without internet, television, email, or cellular phone service for more than three months at a time.

Experience operating ATV and use of firearms (PREFERRED)

Bird handling experience, including net extraction, banding, and taking morphological measurements (PREFERRED

Interest in ecology, wildlife management and conservation, and environmental sciences (PREFERRED)


Bachelors Degree in Ecology, Wildlife Management, or Environmental Science (PREFERRED)

First aid training (PREFERRED)

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:Applicants must demonstrate they have experience conducive to thriving in a remote field camp for more than three months: this can be demonstrated by previous research experience in remote field camps, extensive guiding experience (e.g.; hunting, mountaineering, etc), and/or extensive foreign travel in less-developed countries OR an equivalent combination of training and experience that demonstrate the capability to live without the amenities of daily life for several months.

Rate of Pay:$14.37 per hour(Temp Grade 00_74)
