National Park Service Biological Science Technician (Plants) in Fairbanks, Alaska

This position is a Full-Time temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. The position may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement may be eligible for rehire in subsequent service years provided the employee does not exceed 1039 hours of work in their service year. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Alaska Regional Office is April through September, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2018.
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

As a GS-07 biological science technician, you will participate in invasive plant control and vegetation impact mitigation projects. Primary duties will include surveying and mapping invasive plant populations using a Trimble GPS unit; leading a small field crew in invasive plant control work; identifying native and non-native plants using field guides and taxonomic keys; controlling invasive plants by hand pulling and applying herbicide; using GPS unit to mark a trail covered in snow with flagging to protect alpine vegetation from hiker impacts throughout the summer; downloading and managing all data, and completing reports. Field work includes working outside most days, often in inclement weather; hiking on uneven and steep terrain carrying a heavy pack; participating in occasional coastal multi-day field trips traveling on and working from large and small motorized boats to conduct invasive plant survey and control work. Other work may include assisting the trail crew with revegetation projects, and native seed collection.
Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position to perform fieldwork in the backcountry up to 20 nights per month in the summer.

- This position is subject to drug testing based on the collateral duty requiring firearms in the back-country or other locations for non-law enforcement reasons such as protection from animals. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
To qualify for this position at the GS-7 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE:At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-6 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: planning field projects and collecting and summarizing field data; using taxonomic keys to identify vascular and non-vascular (lichens, bryophytes) in the field; using compound and dissecting microscopes and taxonomic keys to identify vascular and non-vascular species in the lab; collecting and preparing large numbers of herbarium-quality specimens of vascular and non-vascular plants; preparing draft project reports; installing, operating, and maintaining equipment (e.g., data loggers, dendrometers) used in vegetation monitoring; using a variety of software to compile, summarize and report information; and providing information to other employees and visitors about the natural resources programs. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year (18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours) of graduate level course work, from an accredited college or university, leading to a Master's degree with a major study directly related to the position to be filled. Graduate study must have been in a field of study that is directly related to the work of this position, i.e., scientific or technical study, such as botany, plant physiology, plant anatomy, plant taxonomy or related courses in the field of plant biology. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experienceas described above. To combine education and experience, first take To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours or equivalent earned towards a graduate degree and divide by 18 semester hours or equivalent. Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". When describing the nature of your duties (e.g., your paid or unpaid work or volunteer experience), please be extremely clear, thorough, and specific. Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., packs and equipment up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office, laboratory, and in the field. Field work includes exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals. Laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals
